Restaurants in Spoleto

I have two excellent restaurants and one bar for an aperitivo that I highly recommend in Spoleto.

Ristorante Apollinare

Address- Via Sant'Agata 14,

Phone- +39 0743 223256

Website- https://ristoranteapollinare.it

Hours- Open every day for lunch and dinner expect closed on Tuesday

Price- Middle-High Range

Reservations- There is a form you could try on the website here.

This restaurant is quite consistently recommended in the Michelin guide. As stated on their website, it is in a beautiful space dating back to the 13th century, and the food, although innovative, is still an excellent taste of the regional cuisine. I was delighted by the lunch we had here. The location is very central; it is located just across the street from the Roman Theatre, one of my recommended spots.

Recommended Dishes

Antipasto-Stracciata d’uovo al Tartufo di Norcia, con crostini all’olio extra-vergine di oliva (When in Umbria, go for truffle)

Primo-Strengozzi al Tartufo di Norcia or Strengozzi alla Spolentina con salsa di Pomodoro, peperoncino e prezzemolo (A special pasta type from Spoleto similar to fettuccine with either truffle or a tomato based sauce)

Secondo-Lombello di Maialino in Rete di Lardo con pere al Rosso di Montefalco e spuma di Pecorino (An indulgent pork fillet wrapped in lard with pears that have been poached in the local Montefalco wine and a pecorino sauce on top)

Dolci-Creme Brulee alla Lavanda (Creme Brulee with lavender; I love lavender as a flavor!) but all desserts here are innovative and delicious

Osteria Del Matto Di Proietti Filippo

This restaurant was recommended by my friend Lauren who had spent time in Spoleto a year or so before I visited. It is a different albeit pleasant experience! The restaurant is tucked away behind the central market square, and although we went elsewhere for an aperitivo before, we should have saved room. When you enter the charming, eclectic dining room Filippo Proietti will greet you. He fulfills the front of house role and his mother and sister do the cooking. At Osteria Del Matto, I do not need to recommend any dishes because you pay a set price of 25 Euro and the host brings you course after course of whatever his family buys at the market and prepares fresh that day. Expect between 10-12 plates of a selection of antipasti (small plates) first, probably a fresh strangozzi for a primo, a small selection of meat and dolci to finish. You can add on house wine for 5 Euro a half liter.

Caffe Degli Artisti (for aperitivo)

Phone- +39 0743 225071

Hours- Open every day, 7 AM- 3 AM

Price- Low range

Reservations- Not necessary

Aperitivo at Caffe Degli Artisti

Aperitivo at Caffe Degli Artisti

We had a delightful aperitivo in this funky little bar. It is located in the most central piazza, the Piazza del Mercato. We stopped here before popping across the street for dinner at Osteria Del Matto. I was pleasantly surprised by the quality and variety of the snacks served with my spritz. If you are looking for an aperitivo or cheeky drink break, I recommend Caffe Degli Artisti!
